Elbert came from humble means and his career was one of his proudest accomplishments. Then in 1986 Mitcham transferred to the Retired and Older Workers Department and held this position until he retired in 1989. In 1983 Elbert was assigned to the International Job Development and Training Department. He was assigned to represent Locals 735 and 38 and to function as a liaison for the UAW Community Action Program. Later that year, Elbert was appointed to the UAW Region 1A staff as a International Representative. Elbert became the president of Local 735 in 1966 and remained in that position until 1969. He worked his way through the ranks serving in various elected union positions. Elbert developed a passion for helping others and was re-elected as committeeman many times. One year later he started his political career when he was elected as a committeeman for the UAW. He began working for General Motors at the Detroit Transmission plant in 1952. In 1976 he wed Patricia Anne Fox, their marriage lasted until her death in 2012. In 1952 Elbert married Patricia Ann Beckwith with whom he had three children, Robert Allen, Diana Lynn and Kimberly Ann. He was a hard worker and did many odd jobs from a young age to help his family. Elbert was born on Decemto Harry and Lucille Mitcham in Detroit, Michigan. Dementia overtook his life and he was 89 years old at the time of his death. Elbert “Mitch” Baily Mitcham of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 14, 2023.
